Your check engine light just came on and your OBD-II scanner is showing a code you've never seen before. You search the code online and find threads full of worst-case scenarios — failed injection pumps, dying injectors, cracked fuel lines. You start budgeting thousands for a shop diagnosis.

Before you do any of that, check the filters. Six of the most common diagnostic trouble codes on Ford Powerstroke and RAM Cummins diesel trucks are caused directly by clogged, expired, or improperly seated fuel filters and crankcase ventilation filters. The fix takes 30 minutes and costs under $60. The misdiagnosis costs $500 in shop time before anyone even touches a wrench.

Here's each code, what's actually causing it, and the exact OEM filter that clears it.

P0087 — Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low

What your scanner says: Fuel rail system pressure below expected threshold.

What's actually happening: Your engine's fuel rail can't maintain the commanded pressure under load. The ECM detects the pressure drop and sets P0087, often triggering reduced power mode or limp mode under acceleration.

Why it's usually the filter: P0087 is the single most common fuel-filter-related code on both Powerstroke and Cummins engines. A clogged fuel filter restricts flow between the lift pump and the high-pressure injection pump. The lift pump pushes adequate volume at idle, but under acceleration — when fuel demand doubles or triples — the restricted filter can't pass enough fuel. Rail pressure drops, P0087 sets, and the truck derestricts itself to prevent damage.

The fix: Replace both fuel filters. On a 2011–2016 Ford 6.7L, install the Motorcraft FD-4615. On a 2017–2019 Ford 6.7L, install the Motorcraft FD-4625. On a 2013–2018 RAM Cummins, install the Mopar fuel filter set (68197867AB + 68157291AA). On a 2019–2024 RAM Cummins, install the Mopar fuel filter kit (68157291AA + 68436631AA). Clear the code. If P0087 returns after fresh filters, then investigate the lift pump and fuel control actuator.

P008A — Low Pressure Fuel System Pressure Too Low

What your scanner says: Low pressure fuel supply system below threshold.

What's actually happening: This code is specific to the low-pressure fuel supply side — the lift pump and filter system that feeds fuel to the high-pressure pump. It's the upstream cousin of P0087 and appears frequently on Ford 6.7L Powerstroke trucks.

Why it's usually the filter: P008A and P0087 appearing together is the classic signature of a plugged fuel filter. Forum after forum documents the same pattern: both codes set simultaneously, owner replaces fuel filters, both codes clear permanently. One documented case on a Powerstroke forum showed both codes triggered by gelled paraffin wax in the fuel filter during a cold snap — the white wax was visible on the filter media when removed.

The fix: Same as P0087 — replace both fuel filters with the correct Motorcraft or Mopar OEM set for your year. On a 2003–2007 Ford 6.0L, install the Motorcraft FD-4616. On a 2008–2010 Ford 6.4L, install the Motorcraft FD-4617. Prime the system thoroughly after installation — 8–10 key cycles with 30-second pauses.

P0093 — Fuel System Large Leak Detected

What your scanner says: Large fuel system leak detected. ECM may shut the engine down within 60 seconds.

What's actually happening: The ECM sensed a sudden, significant drop in fuel rail pressure — indicating either a physical fuel leak or a massive restriction. This is an urgent code. Diesel fuel rail pressures exceed 26,000 PSI, and the ECM will force a shutdown to prevent damage or fire.

Why it's sometimes the filter: P0093 sets when a fuel filter is installed without the O-rings properly seated, when the filter housing cap isn't torqued correctly, or when an aftermarket filter with incorrect dimensions creates an internal bypass. Air entering the fuel system through a poorly sealed filter drops rail pressure instantly, mimicking a large leak.

The fix: Remove the fuel filter and inspect every O-ring and gasket. Reinstall with the correct OEM filter — genuine Motorcraft and Mopar filters include precisely sized O-rings that aftermarket filters frequently get wrong. If the code appeared immediately after a filter change, the filter itself or its seals are almost certainly the cause.

P1507 — Crankcase Ventilation Filter Restricted (RAM Cummins)

What your scanner says: Crankcase ventilation filter restriction detected.

What's actually happening: The crankcase pressure sensor on your 6.7L Cummins has detected higher-than-normal pressure inside the crankcase, indicating the CCV filter is partially clogged and restricting blow-by gas flow.

Why it's always the filter: P1507 is a filter-specific code. There's no other component in the system that causes it. The CCV filter has accumulated enough soot and oil vapor to restrict flow, and crankcase pressure is building toward the threshold where oil starts being pushed past seals.

The fix: Replace the Fleetguard CV52001 crankcase ventilation filter. This is the only OEM replacement for every 2007.5–2024 RAM 6.7L Cummins. Do not delay — P1507 is the early warning. If you wait, it becomes P1508.

P1508 — Crankcase Ventilation Filter Critically Blocked (RAM Cummins)

What your scanner says: Crankcase ventilation filter critically restricted. Replace immediately.

What's actually happening: Crankcase pressure has exceeded the critical threshold. Oil is actively being forced past gaskets and seals. Every mile driven with an active P1508 increases the risk of rear main seal failure ($1,500 repair), turbo oil contamination, and valve cover gasket blowout.

Why it's always the filter: Like P1507, this code has one cause and one fix. The CCV filter is fully saturated and must be replaced immediately.

The fix: Replace the Fleetguard CV52001 without driving another mile if possible. After replacement, inspect the rear main seal area for active oil leaks, check the turbo inlet pipe for oil residue, and clear the code. If oil damage is already present, address the affected seals before the new filter pressurizes a system with compromised gaskets.

"Change Fuel Filter" or "Water in Fuel" Dash Message

What your dash says: "Change Fuel Filter" or "Water in Fuel" warning.

What's actually happening: Your truck's fuel filter life monitoring system has calculated that the filter has reached its service capacity, or the water-in-fuel sensor has detected moisture accumulation in the fuel water separator.

Why it's always the filter: These aren't diagnostic trouble codes — they're direct maintenance alerts. The truck is telling you exactly what it needs.

The fix: Replace both fuel filters with the correct OEM set for your truck and year. On RAM Cummins trucks, also drain the fuel water separator by opening the drain valve at the bottom of the frame-mounted filter housing until clean fuel flows. The Rule: Always Replace the Filter Before Replacing the Part

Every diesel mechanic knows this principle, but most truck owners skip straight to the expensive diagnosis. Before you book a shop appointment for any fuel-pressure-related DTC, replace both fuel filters with genuine OEM parts, prime the system correctly, clear the code, and drive 50 miles. If the code doesn't return, the filter was the problem — and you just saved yourself $500 in diagnostic fees and potentially thousands in unnecessary parts.
