You bought a diesel truck to tow. A fifth wheel, a car hauler, a flatbed loaded with equipment — whatever the payload, your Powerstroke or Cummins was built for it. But here's what the salesperson didn't mention: the maintenance schedule printed in your owner's manual assumes you're driving unloaded on clean highways in moderate weather. The moment you hook up a trailer, that schedule no longer applies.

Both Ford and RAM publish a separate "severe duty" maintenance schedule that dramatically shortens filter and oil change intervals for trucks that tow, idle frequently, or operate in dusty conditions. Most diesel owners tow regularly and never switch to the correct schedule — running 15,000 miles between filter changes on an engine that's been working twice as hard the entire time.

What Qualifies as Severe Duty?

If any of the following describe how you use your truck, you fall under the severe duty schedule — not the normal one:

You tow or haul loads totaling more than 1,000 miles between oil changes. You idle your engine for more than 10 minutes per hour regularly. You make frequent short trips where the engine doesn't reach full operating temperature. You drive in dusty, muddy, or off-road conditions. You operate in extreme heat or cold.

Most diesel pickup owners meet at least two of these conditions. If you tow a fifth wheel to a campsite every other weekend, you're severe duty. If you haul equipment to job sites, you're severe duty. If you plow snow and idle between runs, you're severe duty. The "normal" schedule was written for empty highway commuting — and almost nobody uses a diesel truck exclusively for that.

What Changes Under the Severe Duty Schedule?

The intervals shift significantly across both Ford and RAM platforms.

Oil and oil filter: Normal schedule allows 10,000–15,000 miles. Severe duty drops to 5,000–7,500 miles. On Ford's 6.0L Powerstroke — which is especially vulnerable to oil contamination because of its HEUI injection system — experienced technicians recommend 5,000-mile oil changes or less when towing. The correct oil filter is the Motorcraft FL-2016 for 2003–2010 Super Duty trucks. For RAM Cummins trucks (both 5.9L and 6.7L), the Mopar 5083285AA (MO-285) is the only OEM oil filter across all model years.

Fuel filters: Normal schedule is 15,000 miles. Under severe towing conditions, both Ford and RAM recommend 10,000 miles — and draining the fuel water separator at every oil change instead of waiting for the dash warning.

Crankcase ventilation filter (RAM Cummins only): Normal interval is 67,500–75,000 miles. Heavy towing and extended idling accelerate CCV filter clogging, and many diesel shops recommend inspection at 50,000 miles for tow vehicles. The Fleetguard CV52001 is the only OEM replacement — aftermarket CCV filters are known to collapse under the additional heat and pressure that towing generates.

Why Towing Destroys Filters Faster

Under load, your engine runs hotter, produces more soot, generates higher fuel pressure, and consumes more fuel per mile. Every one of those factors accelerates filter degradation. The oil filter saturates with soot faster because higher combustion temperatures produce more blow-by. The fuel filters process more diesel per mile under load, reaching their contaminant capacity sooner. The CCV filter on Cummins engines handles more blow-by gas volume, clogging proportionally faster.

A filter rated for 15,000 miles of unloaded highway driving may reach functional capacity at 8,000–10,000 miles of loaded towing. At that point, it either goes into bypass mode — allowing unfiltered oil or fuel through — or it restricts flow enough to starve your engine of fuel under the exact high-load conditions where clean fuel matters most.

An extra filter change per year adds $60–$120 to your annual maintenance cost. A turbo failure costs $2,500. An injection pump replacement runs $4,000. A set of eight injectors starts at $3,000. The math isn't close. If you tow, switch to the severe duty schedule, use OEM filters, and protect the engine you depend on.
